This cluster looks at the legal foundations of human rights, their conceptualisation and how they have been protected under the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR). The cluster includes comparative analysis, such as the relationship between international human rights law and domestic law in various national jurisdictions, the influence of international and European human rights instruments on the African Union’s development of human rights’ standards, as well as specific case studies looking at the impact of the incorporation of the ECHR in the UK on specific rights/civil liberties.

DuncanProf Richard StoneProfessor of Law

Professor Stone’s research focuses on civil liberties and human rights and he has written extensively in this area. His recent and current research projects include among others: a consideration of the impact of human rights law, including decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, on day-to day policing ; an analysis of the concept of “deprivation of liberty” under Article 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights; a review of, and analysis of the recent developments in, the balance between privacy and press freedom; reform of powers of entry.

Nathan Cooper’s main research interest is in the relationship between law and social and economic development focusing in particular onSouth Africaand the Southern African Development Community (SADC). His doctoral research considers the right to sufficient water, asking to what extent the existence of such a right affects people‘s experience of access to water and how the exercise of this right may be strengthened.
