Prof Duncan French, Professor of Law; Head of Law
Professor French is a leading academic on international environmental law and the international legal implications of sustainable development. Duncan French’s areas of interest are in public international law, international environmental law, international legal implications of sustainable development, international economic law, law and practice of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Bretton Woods institutions, law of the sea and legal aspects of Antarctic governance.Duncanhas written widely on legal issues falling in these areas both in international journals and books. In his capacity as a senior research fellow of the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law, Professor French spoke to diplomats at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York in April 2012 on the role of international tribunals in resolving complex environmental and socio-economic disputes. A recent work (Global Justice and Sustainable Development (D. French (ed) Martinus Nijhoff (2010)) was nominated for the prestigious International Studies Association 2012 Harold and Margaret Sprout Environmental Studies Book prize.
Dr Graham Melling, Senior Lecturer in Law
Dr Melling is an international lawyer with research interests in the field of public international law. His particular areas of research interest are in international legal theory, the development of international law, rule change and norm creation. Falling in these areas Graham’s research has covered the law regulating the use of force, indigenous rights, and the judicial function of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
